Check this complete guide to Deuces wild video poker and find everything you need to know to get started.
Next to the slot machines, video poker is probably the most popular electronic game in any online or land-based casino. Unlike slots, the game does reward players for skill, and for those who like to play poker but also like to play alone, it’s the perfect way to gamble.
Now that we’ve introduced the basics of Deuces Wild gameplay and strategy we’ll get into the ‘nuts and bolts’ of how to implement it. The strategy below is designed for ‘full pay’ Deuces Wild but is a good starting point for learning the right decisions for the different paytables and variations (about a dozen) that you’ll find at casinos throughout North America and online.
One of the best things about video poker is that if you look for the right machines, you can even gain a small edge over the house. Some games can get you up to and over a 99% return rate, which you can then push over 100% by taking advantage of VIP and comp programs. On others, if you play the right strategy, you can get better than a 100% RTP (return to player) rate right from the start.
The thing is, there are many different types of video power. You’ll see some such as “Jacks or Better” or “Deuces Wild”, for example. Each type of game will have its own strategy for getting the most out of it. Within each type of game, like “Jacks or Better”, as an example, there are machines with different payout tables and you’ll need to sniff out the games with the right pay tables to get the best advantages.
All video poker machines play based on a few basic principles. They’re all based on the classic five-card draw version of poker. Just about all of them use a single 52 card deck. You’ll be dealt five random cards to start. You’ll then get the chance to choose which cards you want to keep (if any) and the cards you choose to discard will be replaced with new random cards from the remaining deck to form your final hand. Loss, win, and payout amounts are all determined by that final hand.
All video poker games will also allow you to play a multiple number of coins, (similar to slot machines) usually from one up to five or six coins on each hand.
The idea here is to give you strategies for each as many of the variations of video poker as we can find, but that will take quite a few articles and a bit of time. For this first edition, we’re going to start with one of the video poker games that is popular, easy to find, and gives you the possibility to gain an edge of slightly over 100% with the right strategy. If you can follow the strategy we layout here, you can expect a return of about 100.7%
Now, remember, nobody said this is going to be easy. If you want to beat the casino at this game or any other one, it’s going to take a lot of study and a lot of practice to get there. Even if you never reach “pro” status, though, you’ll at least be armed with enough information to make your money last as long as possible and give you the most playtime you can get out of your favourite video poker game.
The first thing you need to know about any video poker game is that if you want the best rewards, you have to play the maximum number of coins on every game. You will not be able to achieve the advantage unless you do.
The first thing you’ll need do is sniff out the right machine(s) to play on. You’ll see that not all machines that bear the Deuces Wild name are exactly the same. To make sure you’ve got the right game, you need to examine the payout table. You want to find machines with a payout table that contains the following values—This is what is known as a “full pay” machine.
Natural royal flush 800
Four deuces 200
Wild royal flush 25
Five of a kind 15
Straight flush 9
Four of a kind 5
Full house 3
Flush 2
Straight 2
Three of a kind 1
Nothing 0
These will be the payouts displayed for wins when a single coin is played. Remember, though, that you’ll need to play the maximum number of coins on each deal if you want to gain the full benefits of the strategy.
When it comes to playing Deuces Wild video poker, there is one rule that comes above all others. You never, ever, under any circumstances, discard a deuce. It doesn’t matter if you have four garbage cards and a deuce, you’ll never discard all five cards and try to hit something. You absolutely always hold every deuce that you are given on the initial deal.
The following may seem somewhat complex, but it is possible to make things extremely complicated if you want to squeeze every last little reward out of the machine, but we’re talking less than one-tenth of one percentage point of profit. So, we’ll try to make this as easy as possible.
Everything is based on how many deuces show up on the initial deal. What you want to do is look at how many deuces you’re given, then follow the charts below.
First, find the chart with the number of deuces in your initial hand. The list starts with four and goes down to zero. Then, on each chart the options are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. up to 10 on the last one. On each chart, look up the best hand you have, keep it, and discard the rest of the cards.
For example, let’s say you end up with two deuces. You’ll go to the two deuces chart and look up the possible hands you can make with your cards and hold onto the one highest on the list (the hand closest to number 1). In this example, you might have two deuces, but they also give you four to a royal flush. Two deuces alone is number four on the list while four to a royal flush is number two on the list. In this case you would hold onto the four to a royal flush since it is higher on the list and discard the one extra card.
There’s nothing else on the list here. If you end up with four deuces, keep them all and discard the fifth card. Then smile big as you collect that nice reward you’re about to receive.
It might seem like lot to remember, but if you put this information on flashcards, practice, and repeat, you’ll have it all down in no time at all. Then, for all intents and purposes, you’ll be able to play video poker for free when you go to an online casino.
